Artist's Description

The original words, titled Amazing Grace, were written in 1772 by John Newton.

John Newton was involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland, so severely that he called out to God for mercy. This moment marked his spiritual conversion but he continued slave trading until 1754 or 1755, when he ended his seafaring altogether. He repented of his vile sinful life and began studying Christian theology. He was ordained in the Church of England.

The words to amazing Grace were later changed into a Hymn. Here is the Hymn as we know it today.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
